been pruning back some Buddleia and tidying up the dead and frosted stuff. One difficult job was clearing away some barbed wire courtesy of previous owners. nasty stuff and still got some more to get rid of.

Know the feeling well,

Finished early myself today (unoffically :-)), over the weekend picked up some used carpet an underlay, layed out the carpet and underlay to cover the grass to make a bed 40' by 6' .

Should I have put black polythene onder the carpet and underlay or will they do the job on their own, noteing that only one layer was used

The carpet is enough AJ it's the lack of light that works...I cut old carpet in to strips about 2' wide and cover the paths with it, it's non slip and keeps the weeds down

I thought I would make you feel bad Steve. I have been known to wonder what I should write for my contribution to GN and when I look back over this topic, it is there all written out for me in diary form.

One thing to watch for when using old carpet. Make sure it isn't a nylon one. Even some of the backing on wool carpets can be the devils own job to get rid of once the carpet breaks down and starts rotting. Otherwise fine.
I knew an old gardener who used to cover the area with manure then the carpet went over. After pulling back the carpet he would plant potatoes straight into the ground. Always had a great clean crop. He used maris bard 1stEarly

Some do similar with thick black polythene but leave it down and plant potato sets through holes in it...no need for earthing up

I know what you mean about the nylon carpet! it can break up in to strands that you get your foot caught in as you walk along

I dug up all the old rotten onions that I grew from seed last year, they didn`t do well at all.
I also dug up some healthy looking large parsnips , I thought they would be well rotted looking at the top foliage.

Aired the greenhouse and sprayed the bottom of the door with "Vapet get off" a pet cat and dog repellent a neighbour gave me .It has a lasting citric smell, not too pleasant but a lot better than the spray the cats leave behind. Hope it works.

Hope it wasn't too painful, at least you're the genuine article, I watched a woman on TV yesterday who had a whole new set of teeth....twice. And that was only the start, it would be difficult to know what original bits were left She may as well change her name as well.

Arboreally speaking, I prefer the Oak to the Beech, it's my favourite tree. Give me an Interesting character to a smooth trunk And the best examples are genuinely British just like Carol

not sure yet Ron, it's quite a sunny spot, and I would like at least some of it evergreen, have to look into it.

this is the best picture I have, it's only about 3ft, breezeblock, I've got 5ft trellis to put in front of it, the rest is just a temporary screen which will eventually be replaced with fencing. It gets quite dry in the summer, I've tried clematis but it doesn't like it, and although I like my neighbour, I want to look at my garden and not hers

We are just waiting for the insurance to sort them selves out Ron, Graham knows what he's after and had it priced up.
