Afternoon Huff,
We did have a similar thread a couple of weeks ago, well it was more to do with making u'r own seed tape, don't think anybody has tried, but from what I read they're supposed to be the bee's knee's, well that's what they say. Very quite on here this avo, suppose everyone's out doing a bit, I'm stuck inside nursing the man flu |

I've been making my own seed strips, using loo roll Just mix some flour and water paste, drop blobs onto a length of loo roll (cut to size, to fit your seed bed) and position your seeds at the required distance apart. Then, when the weather warms up, just make a drill, drop your loo roll seed tape into it, and cover with soil/compost. It's a bit fiddly, and I don't know if it works (will the seeds germinate through the paste, or will I be growing bog plants?? ) It's an idea I read in a mag, so I thought I'd give it a try...

I tried them last year with carrots and got very poor germination. The trouble with seed tapes is if a few seeds don’t germinate then you have great gaps in the row. I will be returning to normal seeds this year, it might be far more wasteful but at least I will be guaranteed a full row.
I will add that I only have a very small area of the garden where carrots will grow so every seed needed to germinate.
I hope you have more success MG, you've put so much work into those. |

Thanks WLF My problem is I always sow my seeds too thickly I have poor vision, and just can't see the seeds against the soil. On the loo paper I can see them, which is a great benefit If some don't germinate, then I've got plenty more to fill the gaps! |

I read the same magazine M.G.! I think it looks like a good idea for carrots in particular as you wouldn't have to thin them out (attracting carrot flies) but if they don't germinate as happened to W.F. then I suppose it's a waste. Let us know how you get on with them M.G. |

What I should have done was sown some extra to fill the gaps, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I’m going to make some for sowing my leaks (with a few extra for the gaps).
We'll compare results. |

Seeds of Italy do a good range
http://www.seedsofitaly.com/catalogue/35
I've not tried the tape range but as anyone who has bought any non F1 seeds from this company will know they don't do 6, 12, 15 or a few seeds per packet, each packet has hundreds of seeds that last you years (depending on viability) |

Didn't see this thread until today so apologise for adding to it so late after everyone else. We sowed two lots of carrots last spring one tape and the other just the seeds, then we stupidly went on holiday in June and it got hot, with no one to water the strip seeds faired better than the other seeds. Don't know if it was just a fluke + they were two different varities both early nantes but the strip was 5 and the seeds 2.this yr I will use again
I have bought some more strip seeds and circle seeds from Lidls, it seemed a really good idea to just place the circle in the pot and lightly cover, and not have to worry about overcrowding.
I haven't started this yr yet as its just too cold and every thing is so delayed (including me in this cold)
