The greater spotted woodpecker has been busy tapping away on a silver birch in the garden next door today. Guess he knows spring is on the way

i have an old tree stump, trunk really, and going by all the bits fallen out of it, it looks like there is a woodpecker visiting that though I haven't seen one.

It is quite aways down the garden and this particular trunk is quite soft where it has rotted.

We don't get woodpeckers in our garden, I don't think I've ever seen any locally either but you get them a few miles away in Cheshire. There was an interesting piece in the Times the other day about 'birders' getting excited because a black woodpecker had been spotted apparently drumming on a telegraph pole in Cumbria & you never get black woodpeckers in this country. They were disappointed when someone explained that it was a decoy stuck there by BT in an effort to scare off any great spotted woodpeckers who like to drum on the poles especially the metal bits at the top!

I saw that on our local TV news last night. Apparently one lady was really embarrassed because she had contacted a local birdwatch group to report the sighting.

What about a poor man's orchid? Then you could be kept in the garden.
