I am looking to buy a rotovator/tiller for my new veg plot.

We have heavy soil but have dug out most of the big clumps of clay but the ground needs turning and loosened.

I have found the Matnis 4 stroke which looks great but a little out of my price bracket.

The other one found is a Maxtra portable Mini Tiller 4 stroke with a 4hp engine digging to 260mm depth and 360mm width...

Can anyone shed any expereinces with Maxtra or know of anywhere with a good price for the Mantis as I have heard only good things about that.

Thanks very much,
Nichola

Hi Nichola, Welcome to the forums

Sweetpea might answer I know he has the mantis, have you tried local allotment societies for second hand?, many upgrade and sell their older one

I got my mantis years ago. It is actually 2 stroke 50:1. When I got it there was a deal which got me lots of accessories.
I have used quite a few tillers over the years. Way back I had a Howard Rotovator but the heavier machines can be difficult to handle.
As steve says, why not check out the 2nd hand stuff. I often see ads in the local press.
The Mantis is relatively lightweight and can be folded to put in boot of a car. After the cultivating tines I find the next most useful attachment is the scarifiers which do a good job on the lawn.
I suppose cost is proportionate to the amount of use it will get.
Useful for tilling freshly dug ground. Don't expect a tiller to cultivate old hard packed soil. No way. Once dug in the first place and largish stones removed it does a good job.

You can hire them, if you do not want to go to the expence of buying.

very true Tel and I have done that on occasion. That allows you to get the feel of a rotovator and lets you discover what they can and cannot do.
