| It was raining this afternoon so we couldn,t do anything outside but at least we have now got a polytunnel to go in.Even in here there is not much we can do at this time of year. All the children(and me)sat round a table and followed some instructions on papers that Gina gave out.We all got a lid ,put damp tissue paper in and then some stones. They all had to choose a toy to put in as well and then sprinkled cress seeds between the stones.I just put them all in the centre of the table to take this picture. They all took them home after. This only took about 20 minutes so Gina gave them some wordsearches and other puzzles to do after. |

| My neighbour made the cheerios loop with her granddaughter Derek. I hope it does work. You thought we weren't listening and we were. Sometimes it takes the birds a little while to try something new. |

| I told you that the Robinson,s Mammoth onion seeds which Gina had bought and which I sowed at home did not germinate. The children have sown the rest of the seeds this afternoon in seed trays. They were put on a windowsill in school hoping for better luck than I had at home. They also sowed some sunflower seeds in drinking cups. These were also put on the windowsill because I didn,t think they would germinate in the polytunnel at this time of year. |

I didn,t tell you what we did at school last Thursday. On Thursday evening I lost my internet connection and yesterday I forgot. The ground was too frozen for me to go on the allotment in the morning but by the time I went to school at 3.30 the sun had been on it and it was O.K.The children just did some weeding and tidying up the butterfly bed and the sensory garden.Rather than me helping them with this I decided it would be best if I started digging over the vegetable beds because this isn't really a job that children can do. |

The first day back at school after half term. There is now a "life skills"gardening class at 2.30 as well as the after school gardening club so I had to go an hour earlier.Next Thursday I am not needed at all because it is "National book day"and they are having a book sale and all the children will be involved with that. The "life skills"children had not done gardening before so as always it begun with some "health ang safety"and showing them all the tools and explaining what they have to be careful about when using them.We then took them round showing them the different gardens in the school grounds and round the playing field. It started raining soon after so the garden club children couldn't go out and were confined to the polytunnel and there is not much they can do there at this time of year.I told you before that Gina had got some Robinson's Mammoth onion seeds hoping to grow them in one of the school gardens.I had sown some of them at home when I sowed my other onions.I have got one seedling whereas I have got a lot from the other vaeieties sown at the same time and in the same conditions.Gina had contacted Robinsons about this poor germination and they had sent her some more seeds. We got the children sowing some of these new seeds and Gina is taking them home and putting the on her kitchen window sill.I took the rest of the seeds home and sowed some .Put some on a heated bench and some in the propagator. When the children had sown their seeds there was nothing else they could do so they made some posters for the book sale next week |

| No life skills class today, just the after school gardening club.It was the first day for a while that the weather was O.K.for the children to work outside. We weeded some containers so that they could be planted up again. |

With the life skills class today we decided to weed and tidy up the sensory garden. It is in sections and one section contained 2 plants of mint.Because mint is invasive Gina had decided that we should dig them up and plant them in pots to restrict the roots and re-plant them in their pots. Why this wasn,t done originally I don't know (I wasn,t guilty). We did this but the roots had spread so much that they were tangled with the roots of other plants. We had to dig up these other plants ,remove the mint roots from round them and re-plant them. The garden club children planted some potatoes in bags for a competition in which other schools were competing. The potatoes, bags and compost had been provided. They then weeded their own beds. |

With the" life skills" class we sowed some packets of mixed hardy annual flower seeds in some borders near the front of the school I have told you before that we have 4 veg beds where we grow crops on a 4 year rotation.I worked out a sowing and planting plan which we keep to each year, designed to make sure that crops are ready for harvesting either before the long summer holidays or not until they go back in September. With the garden club,we began this programme today. We planted onion sets in drinking cups (this makes them earlier than planting them outside),sowed peas in drinking cups and lettuce in cell trays. |

| Aww, they're beautiful Derek, who gets to take them home for Easter or are they going to a 'farm' (good cover for they are going to be used as food for something else!). It would be nice if they're allowed to keep them in the school garden to lay eggs if they're females! |

Hi Here are some more ideas for activities from my school gardening days I used to garden at a school, and got involved with teaching gardening -mainly to older children.
but the most fun lesson with the 5 year olds was sowing nasturtiums in a rough piece of ground that needed brightening up. I got them into teams and made a game of it.Seeing which team made the best and straightest row, or most perfect circle etc.
The seeds were large enough for them to handle and however badly they were planted they grew! Sunflowers and marigolds were another success.
The school were rightly concerned about safety so research poisonous seeds and avoid any dodgy plants. Lupin seeds for example are extremely poisonous.
planting Dogwood cuttings and tiny hedging saplings along the school boundary was another fun exercise. Some of the children measured every 6inches and Then the rest of the children lined up along the row and stuck their seedlings in (in a sort of mexican wave)!a cheap batch of multicoloured labels were shared out with each team having a colour and writing their names on to mark which plants they'd planted. Chaos at times but worth it! |

Thanks for that Pam.I will tell Gina, who runs our gardening club, about these suggestions. To answer Sue,you know that the school is next to the allotments, don't you? Some of the allotments have chickens on them .One of the allotment holders who keeps chickens comes in school regularly because her children go there and she gave the eggs.I asked her yesterday what was going to happen to the chickens when they have grown and she said they were going to another allotment holder who had his chickens killed by a fox.I don,t know who is looking after them in the Easter holidays. The school was considering keeping chickens but have decided against it because they would be a problem during holidays. |

It's nice to hear the chicks are going to a good home Derek & I suppose it isn't practical to keep them at the school, maybe the children will be able to go & visit them on the allotments to see them when they're fully grown hens?

Today we have been planting potatoes in one of the beds that we rotate and the children also planted some in their own beds . We also sowed cabbage, chard and calabrese in drinking cups. Each child was given a leek to take home which were sown last year and grown in a row on last years potato bed. |

The" life skills" class and gardening club started again today after the holidays. Both classes carried on with the veg sowing programme. We sowed turnips, carrots and beetroot direct in the bed in drills,French beans and leeks in drinking cups and lettuce in cell trays.Lettuce are sown every few weeks for continuity so that too many are not all ready at the same time. We also sowed several kinds of herbs in seed trays.During the holidays I had made a "compost presser"for them (if that is the right description)like the one I use at home, for levelling the compost in the trays. The potatoes we planted in bags for a competition were growing well but the bags were only half full of compost so I topped them up. |

There was no life skills class today ,just the gardening club.We were due to sow swedes and radishes outside today but it was raining so we worked in the polytunnel instead. We potted some sweet corn which had been sown in a tray and transfered some lettuces into cell trays. There is not even a gardening club next week because the school is being used for something called a general election.Don,t know if you have heard about it Don't think our gardening club should be interupted for something so unimportant,do you? |

Life skills and gardening club resumed today having been interupted last week for the general election. Both classes were planting things out that were sown earlier-lettuce,cabbages and peas. There were plenty of lettuces left after planting some in the rotated beds so the children planted some in their own beds. Some of them did some weeding in their own beds |
