That's a shame Jan Our local tip has allsorts of gardening "junk" displayed around the entrance, and I've often been tempted by some of it But whenever I've ventured into the site PortaKabin, and asked the men in yellow coats if I could buy anything (like a statue or pot) I've been told "That's Jim's department..." and Jim is ALWAYS on his breakHowever, I live in hope that one day I will rescue a headless statue or something and give it a loving home...

I love routing round our local branch of 'Harrods' as it's fondly known.

That is a shame, our recycling centre/tip has a huge resale area where you can buy absolutely anything, if it gets thrown away and is still useable it’s in the resale area.

How can your Council call it recycling there is so much more that can be re-used other than bottles and tins.

I think our council sells a lot of things to organisations that recycle so they probably make an income out of it that way, but I think your council's way of doing things is much better.

Thanks louiseanne, I'm glad you enjoyed reading about it

PS. The fatsia is a bone of contention between me and hubby....he wants it out I want it to stay (it reminds me of my old friend Scamper). I know it's taking up half the raised bed (and casting shade) but I can't part with it just yet

Things are finally getting going in the Kitchen Garden
My peas are up and doing well...

The herbs are putting on new growth...

The red onions are showing through, and today I sowed swiss chard and lettuce little gem in the raised beds, and mixed salad leaves in a container.

Your peas a way ahead of mine, mine have only just shown themselves.

I lost all of my Thyme this winter except for the bog standard one, same goes for my sage too.

There’s loads of time yet Grindle, you can sow right up until July. I find if I sow them early I can get two successive rows in and they will produce peas before what ever it is lays eggs in them and they get maggots.

It's coming on nicely M.G.
My herbs in pots have taken a battering over the winter with the cold & wet so I'm waiting to see if any have survived.

I've lost a few herbs too...my purple sage has had it I think, and my bay tree has got badly scorched with frost But the mints are coming through, and the thymes are looking OK.

It would take a bomb to kill mint eh

The answer lies in Northumberland soil.

It certainly would Lou! I grow a variety of mints, including black peppermint, silver mint, buddleia mint, pineapple mint and good old traditional mint....and they've all survived the winter

Oh I am so excited My carrots and beetroot have germinated....despite their poor start in life when I glued their seeds to loo roll to make my own seed tapes

My salad leaves are peeping through as well...

And my "First Earlies" are shooting up in their plastic bag...

Help! I know I have to "earth them up", but how far up do I need to cover them?

And my red onions seem to be escaping from the soil Shall I just push them back in...?

Oh heck, there's more to this veggie business than meets the eye

Hi MG cover the potatoes as far up the stem as you can almost hiding the leaves. You could draw a little soil up around the onions just to keep them bedded in but they are looking fine.

Oh I hope so Sue...eating the salad I mean. I get through lots of that ready prepared salad stuff (in packed lunches for the men and my lunch-time butty) and it costs a fortune from the supermarket
Yes, I got my spuds earthed up today and tucked them up under some fleece for tonight...
